The following notes should be read with the appropriate Charts 1 to 32 in ‘River of Islands’ Yarrawonga to Hume, by Leon and Kath Bentley. The book has been out of print since 1985 but might be found in some libraries. The charts are also on the CD-ROM ‘River Murray Charts’ by Maureen Wright, available from this web site www.rivermurraycharts.com.au. The CD-ROM also contains charts from Renmark to Yarrawonga.
Bentleys charted the section of Murray River between Yarrawonga and Hume Dam in 1983 and revised it in 1985. The Bentleys have not revised it again and since their last trip there have been periods of high river and strong flow [e.g. in 1998 when Hume was lowered for upgrading]. Travelers need to be aware that new snags, shifting bars and other changes have occurred. Kath Bentley accepts no responsibility for any damage to property or persons resulting from the use of the words or Charts.
Between December 27, 2004 and January 10, 2005 Barry and Maureen Wright traveled from Albury to Hume, then downstream to Yarrawonga, using the Bentley’s charts. They found them very accurate apart from some changes which have been noted below. In particular blue ‘kilometre signs’ are now in place at intervals of about 2 kilometres. In most cases except for Lake Mulwala these are on the New South Wales bank. Some are missing, but those in place are described below and have had a GPS reading assigned. These readings, plus readings for some markers across Lake Mulwala, are listed at the end of this document.
Descriptions of positions of kilometre signs relate to writing on the original pages of Bentley’s charts. Also Bentleys charts show river heights on each page. Official river heights during this recent trip were very nearly the same except for Charts 28 to 32 [Albury to Hume] where the height in 2004/5 was nearly half a metre more. This could mean that some some snags and shoals seen by the Bentleys might not have been seen on this recent trip.
This upgrade is a guide to river navigation only. Travelers should use due care and be alert for uncharted hazards. We met travelers at Bundalong who had hit a hidden snag, were taking water and had to abandon their trip.
CHART 1 Yarrawonga - MulwalaLake Mulwala is a popular boating and fishing recreation area and abounds with pleasure craft in season. The open water, to the west of the dead trees, can be choppy in rough weather.
A NSW fishing licence is required to fish the lake and boats from NSW Fisheries patrol the lake. The NSW/Vic border follows the southern bank of the lake.
‘Australien’ has been removed from the lake’s edge and is undergoing restoration.
GPS 130 1990 kilometre sign, in open water west of Rams Head
GPS 129 1992 kilometre sign, downstream of 1240, upstream of 1239
Red and green markers mark the channel for boats heading towards or away from Bundalong at the head of the lake.
On pages 2 to 4 GPS readings are given for large red and green buoys marking entrances to ‘short cuts’. Along the way smaller buoys and markers define the channel which we found relatively easy to follow. Otherwise the path follows the old river. Be prepared to share the river and lake with ski boats and others in holiday season.
See notes on Chart 1
GPS 128 marks western end of a short cut across the neck of the loop of old river with the 1242 mile mark. GPS 127 is the eastern end.
GPS 126 marks very large red and green markers with lights, which mark the western end of a long navigation channel through the dead trees. [The other end is GPS 124 on Chart 3].The large markers are between the 1243 mile mark, and the words ‘clear water’.
GPS 125 1998 kilometre sign, along this navigation channel.
See Chart 2 and notes on Chart 1
GPS 125 1998 kilometre sign approximately south of St Helena Island.
GPS 124 Eastern end of marked channel through the dead trees. It is approximately halfway between 1248 mile mark and 1247.
GPS 123 2004 kilometre sign, just ‘downstream’ of 1248 mile mark.
See notes on Chart 1. Navigation channels are marked with red and green markers. They do not necessarily follow the old river. Depths can vary in these channels – we found down to 1.5m in places.
GPS 122 marks the western end of a marked channel across the neck of the old river loop with 1249 mile mark, and GPS 121 is the other end. GPS 122 is just above the ‘D’ and GPS 121 is opposite 1250.
GPS 120 2008 kilometre sign, just above 1250.
GPS 119 is the western end of a marked channel across neck of the large river loop with 1251, 1252 and 1253 miles marks. GPS 119 is just above the word ‘clear’. GPS 118 is the eastern end and is just upstream of 1254 and cuts between the islands. A 4 knot speed limit applies in this short cut.
GPS 117 2016 kilometre sign, on the end of the island next to 1255.
CHART 5 BundalongSee notes on Chart 1.
The Murray is wide and spacious and dotted with islands through this section. It is popular with skiers in season. The navigation path is easier to follow than is looks on paper.
GPS 117 2016 kilometre sign, on the small island to the left of 1255. [See photo]
GPS 116 2018 kilometre sign, on the point just upstream of 1256. It was nearly hidden in the trees.
GPS 115 2020 kilometre sign [see Chart 6], on the point of the large island, four islands from 1258.
CHART 6 Ovens JunctionSkiers use this section of river so be prepared to share the space.
The navigation path is easier to follow than is appears here. Red markers define the shallows near the 2024 km sign.
The Ovens River is navigable for some distance upstream and is also used by skiers and campers. A speed limit of 10 knots applies upstream of the swamp with ‘dead trees’.
GPS 115 2020 kilometre sign, on the point of the last island on this page [see Chart 5].
GPS 114 2022 kilometre sign, about halfway between 1258 and 1259.

GPS 105 2038 kilometre sign, next to fifth snag downstream of 1270.
GPS 104 2040 kilometre sign, not found this trip. In 97/98 it was directly opposite the words ‘Buddha’s Bend’
GPS 103 2042 kilometre sign,opposite Redfin Point.
The river from 2050 to 2060 is shallow [less than 2 m deep] and narrow. This is a ‘no wash zone’ and there are many signs indicating this.
Drummond Bend has been named ‘Taylors Bend’ and is a Forest Reserve, accessible by road.
We did not check the path around Snake Island. There is a good channel across the neck between 2044 and 2050. Be careful of snags.
GPS 102 2044 kilometre sign, just upstream of 1273.
GPS 101 2050 kilometre sign, not found this trip. In 97/98 is was at the upstream entrance to the loop around snake island [on NSW point].
GPS 100 2052 kilometre sign, on the bight, ESE to NNW bend downstream of 1278.
GPS 99 2054 kilometre sign, downstream of 1279, opposite the pump.
2056 kilometre sign, not found this trip. In 97/98 is was downsteam of 1280, at bottom end of next marked sand bar.

GPS 93 2066 kilometre sign, just downstream of 1286 m line.
GPS 92 2068 kilometre sign, 8 willow trees from the right hand edge of the page.
We saw very few snags….I think the area has been snagged since 1985.
This section is popular with campers and skiers in holiday season, so be prepared to share the river.
The entrance to the lagoon upstream of 1289 is navigable for shallow draft vessels. Some nice canoeing country.
GPS 92 2068 kilometre sign. See previous page.
GPS 91 2070 kilometre sign, not found this trip. In 97/98 it was on the point at 1288.
GPS 89 2072 kilometre sign, not found this trip. In 97/98 it was around the point upstream of 1289.
Basket willows have been planted at the base of the red cliff at Corowa Golf Club.
The channel markers downstream of 1291 are not longer there.
An 8 knot speed limit applies between the ‘pump in hut on water tank’ and the bridge on Chart 13.
Lions Riverside Park [GPS 87], where the chart says ‘reserve’, is a good place to moor and stretch legs. Toilets, tables, BBQ and tap water are available here. No signs prohibit camping. Elsewhere along this bank is mainly private land. The shopping centre is 2 to 3 kilometres from here and better accessed from the bridge area [see Chart 13].
A caravan park and Bed and Breakfast are upstream of the reserve.
2074 kilometre sign not found. In 97/98 this was just downstream of Corowa Golf Club
GPS 88 2076 kilometre sign, opposite ‘pump in hut on water tank’.
GPS 87 Lions Riverside Park
GPS 86 2078 kilometre sign. I am not sure where this fits on the page…..maybe just into Chart 13.
CHART 13 WahgunyahCorowa has several caravan parks fronting the river. In summer these are popular with skiers, so be prepared to share the river, especially upstream of the bridge. Downstream of the bridge an 8 knot speed limit applies.
For shopping, moor near the bridge at the two rowing clubs. It is about a half a kilometre walk to the bottom of the main street.
This area appears to have been snagged.
GPS 86 2078 kilometre sign, approximately between the two fences near the bottom end of the map.
GPS 85 Corowa / Whagunyah bridge
GPS 84 2080 kilometre sign, on the edge of the lagoon, close to the bridge. It was upside down in Jan. 2005.

This section appears to have been snagged since 1985.
The caravan park just upstream of 1296 has mooring space for guests only.
GPS 82 New bridge
GPS 81 2084 kilometre sign, between two willows next to ‘wide bend’.
GPS 80 2086 kilometre sign, about half way between 1297 and 1298, between 8th and 9th willow downstream of 1298.
GPS 79 2088 kilometre sign, at the downstream end of the cliff downstream of 1299.
GPS 78 2090 kilometre sign, upstream of 1300, opposite the first fence.
This area appears to have been snagged since 1985.
GPS 77 2092 kilometre sign, at base of the cliff in front of the house upstream of 1301.
GPS 75 2094 kilometre sign, just downstream of the pump at ‘Elenara’.
GPS 74 2096 kilometre sign, upstream of 1303, 5 snags upstream of junction of ‘shallow’ and the Murray.
GPS 73 2098 kilometre sign, downstream of 1305, opposite the sandy point.
CHART 16 Murphy’s CreekWe traveled the ‘dead river’ and found it shallow [down to 80cm] and reedy. Murphy’s creek is navigable to the ruins of the old bridge, which show as rapids, and seem closer to the junction than shown on the chart. The swirling current makes it difficult to moor anywhere near the old bridge. Lots of campers and skiers use this area in holiday season as it is forest reserve on the Vic bank.
The channel along the ‘Sandy cliff’ part of the river is OK.
Keoghs Island is now joined to the NSW bank and has a lovely sand bar on the upstream side. Land upstream of here is private property on the NSW side.
GPS 72 2102 kilometre sign, about half way along the ‘dead river’ on the island side.
GPS 71 2104 kilometre sign, just upstream of Keogh’s Island.
GPS 70 2106 kilometre sign, at the downstream end of the cliffs.

Some of this area is private property, especially on the NSW side.
Watch for snags….there are new ones in this stretch.
GPS 68 2110 kilometre sign, downstream end of the high bank at 1312.
GPS 67 2114 kilometre sign, opposite the house at ‘Terravinia’
Some of this area is private property, especially on the NSW side.
Be careful of visible [and not visible] snags.
GPS 66 2118 kilometre sign, downstream of 1317, on the downstream side of the three willows.
2120 kilometre sign, about halfway between 1317 and 1318 just upstream of ‘u/w’.
2122 kilometre sign, not seen this trip, but in 97/98 is was under the words ‘Morefield’ reserve.
The snags in Parlour Creek do not appear troublesome.
For shopping in Howlong, best access is from the Lion Reserve near the bridge across Parlour Creek. It is about half a kilometre to the centre which has a 7 day supermarket, pub, bait and ice shop.
A four knot speed limit applies from the junction of the Murray and Parlour Creek to the junction of Snart’s Creek.
The low cable upstream of the bridge [GPS 59] is gone.
GPS 65 2124 kilometre sign, on the point upstream of 1320, opposite the two snags.
GPS 64 2126 kilometre sign, downstream of ‘Town Pump’at start of cliff.
GPS 63 2128 kilometre sign, not found. In 97/98 this was at the junction of the Murray and Parlour Creek.
GPS 61 2130 kilometre sign, downstream of 1324 across the river from ‘Riverdale’ silos.
GPS 59 Bridge across the Murray
CHART 20 Black Swan LagoonThe reach with the gravel bar, between 1328 and 1329, is shallow [80cm to 1m] in the channel shown. It might be deeper close to the Victorian bank [we didn’t check].
Either channel is OK at the island at 1328. We did the Vic side and our friends did the other.
Downstream of 1328, next to the snag marked u/w in the reach, is a large snag in the middle. It was ½ m out of the water when we passed by. Keep to the Victorian side [left traveling downstream] and take care.
GPS 58 2134 kilometre sign, about halfway between 1326 and 1327 on the long reach.
GPS 57 2136 kilometre sign, on the point downstream of 1328.
GPS 56 2138 kilometre sign, near of 1329, under the ‘W’ in NSW.
GPS 55 2140 kilometre sign, downstream of 1330, opposite U [overhanging tree].
GPS 54 2142 kilometre sign, opposite the creek opening with the suspension bridge upstream of 1331.
2144 kilometre sign, not found.
GPS 53 2146 kilometre sign, between the fence and the beginning of the cliffs downstream of 1333.
GPS 52 2148 kilometre sign, downstream of 1334, just past
GPS 51 2150 kilometre sign, not found this trip. In 97/98 it was near the second snag downstream of 1335.
GPS 50 2152 kilometre sign, downstream of 1336, opposite the head of the arrow.
At 1337 and upstream may have been the ‘old’ Hell’s Gates as referred to by EJ Brady in ‘River Rovers’. [See Bentley’s notes, ‘Hells Gates’ Chart 26 ‘River of Islands’].
In any case this area is tricky and quite shallow in places. We registered down to 1 metre and were being very careful. The channel on the NSW side of the island at 1377 does not appear to be navigable.
Snags downstream of this were not a problem. Has this area been snagged?
We saw a beautiful white breasted sea eagle near 1340.
GPS 48 2154 kilometre sign, opposite ‘Islands of Basket Willows’ just downstream of 2 snags.
GPS 47 2156 kilometre sign, by the first fence upstream of 1338.
GPS 44 2158 kilometre sign, next to the first willow upstream of 1339.
GPS 43 2160 kilometre sign, near the first fence downstream of 1341.
CHART 23 RedbankAt the island at 1343 the left hand channel is the best [closest to the Victorian bank].
At the island just downstream of 1347 the preferred channel is closest to the NSW bank [top].
There are warning signs on each side of the entrance to the lagoon downstream of 1347.
2162 kilometre sign, at 1342 mark. No GPS reading taken.
2164 kilometre sign, not found.
GPS 42 2166 kilometre sign, not found this trip. In 97/98 it was upstream of 1344 next to U.
GPS 41 2170 kilometre sign, not found. In 97/98 it was at the entrance to the lagoon, on the right hand side.
Warning signs and a log fence [groyne] are at the entrance to the lagoon upstream of 1348.
GPS 40 2172 kilometre sign, downstream of 1348 on the upstream side of the point, opposite U.
GPS 39 2176 kilometre sign, about half way between 1350 and 1351 on NSW point.
GPS 38 2178 kilometre sign, upstream of the last sand bar on right hand side of the page, near Y.
Dight’s hill is one of the first of the hills near the river traveling upstream [last traveling downstream from Hume].
In places in this section log fences have been erected on banks presumably to help prevent erosion.
GPS 38 2178 kilometre sign, just upstream of the last sand bar on the left hand side of the page.
GPS 37 2180 kilometre sign, downstream of 1353, in bight on the wide bend opposite the fence on the Victorian bank.
GPS 36 2182 kilometre sign, right at 1354.
GPS 35 2184 kilometre sign, upstream of 1355, near the snag shown in the middle [which we did not find].
We approached the section of river at 1358 with trepidation, only to find that the area seemed to be relatively snag free. Our friends, who had been watching for our reaction, then told us that it had been snagged when they were last through in December 97. The upstream island near the inlet to the old river loop is now joined to the land. Downstream on the NSW bank are log fences to reduce bank erosion.
GPS 34 2186 kilometre sign, upstream of 1356, past ‘wide bend’, near the fence and willow.
GPS 33 2188 kilometre sign, on the point opposite ‘High Pressure Gas Pipeline’.
CHART 27 Wodonga CreekThe island downstream of 1360 is now larger and the channel is almost blocked off at the downstream end.
GPS 32 2192 kilometre sign, just upstream of 1359, opposite the fence.
GPS 31 2194 kilometre sign, on the point at 1360.
Mooring near the boat ramp at Noreuil Park gives easy access to two service stations with supplies across the Hume Highway. More serious shopping would require a long walk into Albury shopping centre.
The willow in the middle upstream of the railway bridge is gone.
Upstream of the railway bridge there are two posts only in the water with a sign ‘warning underwater obstruction’. The passage between the poles appears safe.
GPS 30 2196 kilometre sign, just upstream of 1361.
GPS 29 Boat ramp and tie up for shopping.
GPS 28 2198 kilometre sign, at the Albury Wodonga traffic bridge.
GPS 27 Railway bridge.
GPS 25 2220 kilometre sign, just downstream of ‘Riverview’ by the second willow.
GPS 24 2222 kilometre sign, just downstream of 1364.
We launched our boat at the ramp near Eastern Hill and headed upstream to Hume. The ramp is user friendly and close to Albury by road. On the return journey we camped on New Years Eve on a lovely sandy island opposite 1367, just downstream of the entrance to Wodonga Creek. While there we recorded 22 different native birds, including nesting pardalotes. The island as shown has changed shape and seems to have merged with the gravel bar on the point. In low water it would be joined to the big island formed by the Murray and Wodonga Creek.
The gravel bar downstream of 1369, near ‘shallow side bend’ is well out in the river. We ran aground here.
There was no sign of the gravel bar near the word ‘turbulent’.
GPS 23 2210 kilometre sign, just downstream of 1369 near U.
2208 kilometre sign, not found
2206 kilometre sign, not found
CHART 30 MungabareenaAt 1373, the best path is on the NSW side of the island. The downstream island is further out in the main channel than shown. Keep to the Vic side of this island and the NSW side of the upstream one.
t 1372, the island in the bight has now joined the land on the Victorian side, so navigation is only on the north side.
Watch out for snags. Keep well away from the rock weirs at the entrance to Ryan’s Creek as there was a strong flow through the creek and a big drop over the rocks. There are danger signs at the entrance, but it might be too late if you are close enough to read them!
GPS 22 2212 kilometre sign, on the point with the gravel edge, upstream of 1370.
GPS 21 2214 kilometre sign, close to the bridge at Mungabareena pumping station.
GPS 19 2216 kilometre sign, [one of two], downstream of 1373 near the first fence.
GPS 18 2216 kilometre sign [one of two], downstream from the rock weirs, opposite the first gravel bar traveling downstream.
Keep well away from the rock weirs. The current is swift and there is a waterfall. The overhead sign says ‘DANGER, NO ENTRY, ROCK WEIRS’.
At the island near 1376 we took the shortest route on the south side.
GPS 18 2216 kilometre sign, [one of two] downstream from the rock weirs, opposite the first gravel bar traveling downstream.
GPS 17 2218 kilometre sign, [one of two], upstream of three willows opposite ‘training spur’.
GPS 16 2218 kilometre sign, [one of two], next to the second fence downstream from 1375.
GPS 15 2220 kilometre sign, just upstream of the pumping station, near the entrance to the channel behind the island.
CHART 32 Hume DamWe camped at the old [abandoned] caravan park at the weir, on the Victorian side. It now appears to be private property and has [curious] cattle grazing. Otherwise it is an ideal camping area. The PPB reserve area is not easy to access. Getting to the top of the weir from here is tricky without walking through electricity commission land. Perhaps better access is via the road over the bridge at Heywood.
Watch for snags. Current is swift depending on Hume Dam release.
GPS 14 Camp at the old caravan park [now abandoned…no kiosk]
2222 kilometre sign, not found. In 97/98 it was upstream of 1377, just upstream of the two willows.
2224 kilometre sign was near the H in HEYWOOD, just downstream of the bridge.
